PVG Airport (Shanghai Pudong International Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Shanghai Pudong International (PVG/ZSPD) handled 4,096,016 tonnes of cargo in 2025, up 8.6 percent and second only to Hong Kong in the world rankings, making it mainland China's leading air freight airport. Unlike many high-volume airports, PVG combines heavy belly capacity with a genuinely large dedicated freighter operation served by its own cargo terminals. China Cargo Airlines is the main home-based all-cargo carrier, operating alongside FedEx Express, UPS Airlines and Cathay Cargo, with Kalitta Air adding widebody freighter capacity in 2025. Electronics, semiconductors and machinery components dominate the traffic, together with pharmaceutical and temperature-controlled shipments and a sharply expanded flow of cross-border e-commerce. The airport's hinterland is the Yangtze River Delta: Suzhou, Wuxi, Ningbo and Hangzhou sit within one to four hours by truck, and road feeder services link PVG to manufacturing sites across eastern China. Bonded areas within the Shanghai free trade zone allow goods to be stored, repacked and forwarded in bond or after clearance, which supports regional distribution models. The Port of Shanghai, including the Yangshan deepwater terminal, is within trucking distance and makes sea-air combinations practical for less time-critical goods. Nearby alternatives include Hangzhou (HGH) for e-commerce volumes, Nanjing (NKG) and, for pure freighter traffic, Zhengzhou (CGO).
