About This Airport
Frankfurt Airport (IATA: FRA, ICAO: EDDF) handles roughly 2 million tonnes of air cargo and mail a year, more than any other airport in Germany and among the top three in Europe. Operated by Fraport AG, it is the global hub of Lufthansa Cargo and home base of the Lufthansa Group. CargoCity South forms the core of the freight operation: a dedicated district housing over 200 forwarders, handlers and authorities, complemented by the Lufthansa Cargo Center on the north side. Specialised facilities include the Perishable Center for fresh produce and certified pharma infrastructure for temperature-controlled shipments. More than 80 airlines sell cargo capacity out of Frankfurt, from widebody belly space to full freighters. The airport sits directly on the Frankfurter Kreuz motorway interchange (A3/A5), has an integrated ICE long-distance rail station and lies about 12 kilometres from the city centre. It also anchors Europe's road feeder service network - much of the "air freight" booked at smaller German airports actually travels to FRA by truck. On the passenger side, the airport counts around 60 million travellers a year, again the largest figure in Germany. Customs clearance runs around the clock, a decisive factor for express and e-commerce flows.
