MXP Airport (Milan Malpensa International Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Three quarters of Italy's air cargo passes through one airport: Milan Malpensa (IATA: MXP, ICAO: LIMC) handled a record 760,000 tonnes in 2025, up 4.3 percent and the best result in its history. The Cargo City south of Terminal 1 anchors the operation: DHL Express has run its Italian air hub here since 2021, having relocated it from Bergamo (completed 2022); FedEx and UPS keep their own stations, and full freighters from Cargolux, Qatar Airways Cargo, Air China and Turkish Cargo call regularly, with more than 20 scheduled freighter services reaching over 80 destinations. Handling capacity keeps growing: dnata is investing more than EUR 25 million in a 10,000 m2 facility rated for over 100,000 tonnes a year, while Swissport ramped its Malpensa operation, launched in 2025, to roughly 100 tonnes of daily throughput within five months. The commodity mix mirrors the hinterland: Milanese fashion exports, Lombard pharmaceuticals, machinery from northern Italy's industrial belt. Operator SEA Aeroporti di Milano offers two parallel 3,920-metre runways, long enough for fully laden freighters. Passenger traffic runs at around 27 million a year. The site lies 49 kilometres northwest of Milan in the province of Varese, served by the A8 and A26 motorways; Zurich is about 220 km away and Basel around 300 km, which makes MXP a practical point of entry for Swiss shippers as well. Forwarders weighing alternatives usually compare Milan Bergamo (BGY) for express volumes and Bologna (BLQ) for cargo from the eastern half of northern Italy. When Alitalia pulled its hub in 2008, Malpensa was written off — as a cargo location it has since become Italy's undisputed number one.
