CTA Airport (Catania-Fontanarossa Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Around 13 million passengers a year make Catania-Fontanarossa (IATA: CTA, ICAO: LICC) Sicily's busiest airport by far and southern Italy's second after Naples; in 2026 talks are under way over a partial privatisation of 51 to 66 percent of operator SAC. Mount Etna watches over every departure — and occasionally shuts the place down: when Europe's most active volcano ejects ash, the airport follows one of the world's few standing protocols for volcanic-ash closures. Cargo volume stood at around 5,146 tonnes in 2024, down nearly 22 percent year on year — a sign that freight here moves mostly as belly cargo rather than on dedicated freighter services. For freight, the hinterland counts twice: semiconductor shipments fly out of the "Etna Valley" around the STMicroelectronics plant, joined by perishable exports — fish, fruit and vegetables — from eastern Sicily. Express and belly consignments move through a cargo area with customs clearance; bulk volumes reach the mainland by truck and ferry. Operator SAC runs the site just 5 kilometres from the city centre, with a rail stop and buses into town and the A18 and A19 motorways linking Messina and Palermo. One planning detail: summer tourism peaks absorb belly capacity, and winter schedules thin out noticeably.
