Overview
Indonesia (ID) is Southeast Asia's largest economy, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands and a key ASEAN maritime hub. The country belongs to ASEAN (ATIGA) and RCEP; the CEPA agreement with EFTA (including Switzerland) has been in force since 1 November 2021, while the EU agreement is concluded but not yet in force. Customs clearance runs electronically through CEISA 4.0 of Bea Cukai, connected to the Indonesia National Single Window (INSW); the effective import VAT (PPN) is 11 percent (statutory 12 percent, luxury goods 12 percent). The main gateways are Tanjung Priok (Jakarta, around 7.6 million TEU), Tanjung Perak (Surabaya) and Belawan (Medan), plus the air-cargo hub Soekarno-Hatta (CGK). On land, the Trans-Java toll road and the Trans-Sumatra Highway link the economic centres; freight railways operate on Java and Sumatra, while ferry and coastal shipping dominate between islands. Key exports are coal, palm oil, nickel and metal ores, and LNG; the main trading partners are China, the United States and Japan.
