About This Seaport
Two container cranes, four jib cranes and four rail-mounted gantries equip the Pelindo-run Boom Baru terminal at Palembang, the main port for southern Sumatra. Set about 108 km up the Musi River, the terminal handles containers, dry bulk and general cargo, with container throughput of roughly 82,500 TEU a year. Limited depth – around six metres, up to nine metres below chart datum at the container wharf – caps vessels at about 130 metres in length, while tidal range and silting lengthen loading and discharge times. The cargo mix centres on containers plus regional industrial and agricultural goods from South Sumatra, and a Pelindo car terminal supplements general-cargo work. As Boom Baru is South Sumatra's only import-export port and is increasingly congested, the deep-sea Tanjung Carat port near Banyuasin is slated to break ground in early 2026 to take larger ships. Until then, shippers needing bigger vessels or direct deep-sea services turn to Panjang in Lampung or Tanjung Priok at Jakarta.
