About This Seaport
Eastern Indonesia's principal sea gateway is Makassar, coded ID UPG and known historically as Ujung Pandang, the largest cargo port on Sulawesi and one of the busiest passenger ports in the country. It stands on the Makassar Strait in the island's south. The original Soekarno-Hatta terminal is designed for roughly 700,000 TEU, while the phased Makassar New Port has lifted container capacity from about 1 million toward 2.5 million TEU through quays 1B and 1C, extending the berth from 320 to 1,600 metres. Facilities include ship-to-shore gantries, mobile harbour cranes, reefer points and bulk and general-cargo areas. Throughput is led by agricultural exports such as cocoa, coffee and seafood; Sulawesi's nickel ore leaves mainly through dedicated jetties at the island's smelter sites rather than via Makassar. The hinterland is reached mainly by road, while feeder shipping distributes cargo across the surrounding islands. Operations sit with state operator Pelindo. For added liner coverage or transhipment, Surabaya (Tanjung Perak) on Java and Bitung in northern Sulawesi are the main alternatives.
