About This Airport

Operator MIAL — a joint venture of the Adani Group and the Airports Authority of India — has told 24 cargo carriers that all freighter flights at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) will pause from August 2026 to May 2027. The ten-month closure lets crews re-carpet Runway 09/27, completely rebuild the worn-out cargo apron and add Taxiway E. In 2025 Mumbai still handled about 860,000 tonnes of air cargo, some 260,000 of it on pure freighters (around 31 percent), ranking second in India behind Delhi. Carriers affected include Emirates SkyCargo, Qatar Airways Cargo, Lufthansa Cargo, Turkish Cargo, Cathay Cargo, Ethiopian Cargo, Silk Way West and FedEx. The Santacruz cargo precinct, with its GDP-compliant pharma excellence centre, keeps handling belly freight — Mumbai is India's leading pharmaceutical export point. Freighter traffic is shifting to Navi Mumbai International Airport, opened in December 2025, where FedEx is building a fully automated air cargo hub. Emirates SkyCargo is meanwhile adding a second freighter based in the city. For forwarders, Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva), India's largest container port, lies about 50 road kilometres away, making sea-air combinations attractive, while customs at the air cargo complex runs around the clock.
