Panoramica
The Maldives (ISO code: MV) is an archipelago of over 1,000 coral islands in the Indian Ocean, southwest of India and Sri Lanka. It is a presidential republic administered from the capital island of Male. The climate is tropical, with high temperatures, humidity and seasonal monsoon rains. Tourism and fisheries dominate the economy, while the industrial base is limited and the country is highly dependent on imports of food, fuel and construction materials. Logistics centre on a few sea and air gateways that supply the dispersed islands, with Male Commercial Harbour and Velana International Airport as the key nodes. The national currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR). The growing tourism sector makes efficient island supply increasingly important, while exports remain small and focused on fish and marine products.
