Overview

Bulgaria (ISO-Code: BG) is located in southeastern Europe on the Balkan Peninsula and borders Romania, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece, and Turkey. Politically, the country is a parliamentary republic and a member of the European Union and NATO. The climate varies from continental in the interior with cold winters and warm summers to Mediterranean along the Black Sea coast. Economically, Bulgaria is characterized by machinery, chemicals, food production, and increasingly by IT services, while the agricultural sector has regional significance. The country is dependent on imports for energy, machinery, vehicles, and consumer goods. As a logistically important hub in Southeast Europe, Bulgaria plays a role in transit traffic between Europe and the Middle East, supported by well-developed roads, railways, and seaports on the Black Sea. The national currency is the Bulgarian Lev (BGN), which is fixed to the Euro and ensures stable trade and payment relationships. In foreign trade, Germany, Italy, Turkey, and Russia are among the most important partners. Bulgaria is regarded as an emerging market with a strategic location for regional supply chains and trade.

Customs / Import / Export (EU)

Quick operational overview for shipments to the EU. The EU is a customs union; for imports from non‑EU countries, customs clearance and import VAT are typically key topics.

Documents (typical)
  • Commercial invoice (description, value, Incoterms)
  • Packing list (weights, dimensions, packages)
  • HS code / tariff classification (duties/taxes and restrictions)
  • Importer EORI and (where relevant) origin/preference documents
  • Transport documents (AWB / Bill of Lading) depending on mode
Process (simplified)
  • Prepare export (docs, HS code, origin/preference)
  • Import clearance at the EU entry customs office (declaration, possible checks)
  • Release and delivery; import VAT/duties based on classification and value
Common pitfalls
  • Incoterms unclear → who clears customs/pays import VAT?
  • Missing/wrong HS code/classification → delays and cost risk
  • Origin/preference not properly documented → preference may not apply
  • Inconsistent documents (invoice vs packing list vs shipment data)
Important: Requirements depend on goods, origin, Incoterms, value, and consignee. When in doubt, confirm with your broker/forwarder and official sources.
