The RID – short for «Règlement concernant le transport International ferroviaire des marchandises Dangereuses» – is the binding international framework for the safe carriage of dangerous goods by rail. It defines which substances may be transported, and prescribes the rules for classification, packaging, labelling, and documentation that shippers, forwarders, and railway operators must follow. In the European Union, RID is incorporated into the directive on the inland transport of dangerous goods and is revised on a regular cycle, typically every two years. Practical compliance means producing correct dangerous goods transport documents, selecting approved packaging, and ensuring proper placarding of wagons. RID sits alongside ADR (road), the IMDG Code (sea), and IATA-DGR (air) as one of the four modal pillars of international dangerous goods regulation.
