Overview

The United Arab Emirates (ISO code: AE) is located on the Arabian Peninsula and borders Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the Persian Gulf. Politically, it is a federal monarchy composed of seven emirates with a council of presidents as the highest state authority. The climate is arid and desert-like with very hot summers, mild winters, and low rainfall. Economically, the Emirates rely on oil and gas production, financial services, trade, tourism, and logistics, with Dubai in particular being of global significance as an international trade and logistics hub. In foreign trade, the country primarily exports oil, oil products, aluminum, and petrochemical products, while it relies on imports of consumer goods, machinery, vehicles, and technology. Logistically, the country has modern seaports, international airports, free trade zones, and a well-developed road and rail network, providing a central transit and transshipment function in the Middle East. The national currency is the United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED). Strategic investments focus on infrastructure, transport, logistics, renewable energy, and digitization to enhance competitiveness and secure integration into global supply chains.

Customs / Import / Export (Asia)

Quick operational overview for international shipments to Asia. Product requirements, certificates, and clearance processes can vary significantly by destination.

Documents (typical)
  • Commercial invoice (description, value, Incoterms)
  • Packing list (weights, dimensions, packages)
  • HS code / tariff classification
  • Proof of origin / preference docs (where relevant)
  • Depending on goods: certificates/compliance documents
Process (simplified)
  • Prepare export + complete documentation
  • Import clearance (broker/agent, potential inspections)
  • Release, duties/taxes, and delivery
Common pitfalls
  • Missing product/certificate requirements → delays
  • Misaligned HS code/classification → wrong charges
  • Incoterms/responsibility unclear → cost disputes
  • Inconsistent documents (invoice vs packing list)
Important: Requirements depend on goods, origin, Incoterms, value, and consignee. When in doubt, confirm with your broker/forwarder and official sources.
