About This Seaport
Up to 5 million TEU a year can move through Khor Fakkan (AE KLF), the only fully operational container terminal in the United Arab Emirates outside the Strait of Hormuz. Sitting on the east coast directly on the Gulf of Oman, it lets carriers avoid the detour into the Persian Gulf and save roughly a day of transit time. Operated by the logistics group Gulftainer, the Khorfakkan Container Terminal (KCT) runs as a pure transhipment hub for the Arabian Gulf, the Indian subcontinent and East African markets. The facility spans about 70 hectares with six berths, roughly 2,000 m of quay and around 18 Post-Panamax and Super-Post-Panamax gantry cranes. Water depths near 16 m let it handle the largest ships: in July 2025 the CMA CGM Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (about 20,600 TEU, 400 m) made KCT's largest-ever vessel call. Hinterland access runs by road towards Sharjah and Dubai, with a rail link via the developing Etihad Rail network still to come. Lying outside Hormuz, the terminal gains extra importance whenever the strait faces disruption. Regional alternatives are the major container ports of Jebel Ali (Dubai) and Khalifa Port (Abu Dhabi).
