Opened in 1974 to move perishable fruit out of Colombia's Urabá banana belt, Antonio Roldán Betancur Airport (APO/SKLC) near Carepa has since shifted to a mainly passenger role serving Apartadó, with most flights heading to Medellín. The bananas that built the region now leave overwhelmingly by sea through the Gulf of Urabá ports, not by air. Its roughly 2,180-metre runway accepts A320-family aircraft, but the airport runs no dedicated freight handling or cargo terminal; time-critical air shipments route through Medellín's José María Córdova and onward to Bogotá El Dorado for export. The port area near Turbo lies only about 14 km away, which explains the region's multimodal habit: a short truck leg, then ocean freight. For forwarders, APO is a regional feeder rather than a cargo point.
