YYT Airport (St. John's International Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Transatlantic aviation cut its teeth in Newfoundland, and St. John's International Airport (YYT/CYYT) still trades on that geography as North America's most easterly major airport. Scheduled freight moves mainly with Air Canada Cargo and Cargojet, which serves the airport with Boeing 767s on its overnight Canadian network, alongside PAL Airlines, WestJet Cargo and courier operators such as UPS. Seafood dominates the export side: snow crab, lobster and groundfish leave under temperature control for the US east coast, Europe and Asia. The airport has cargo warehousing with cold storage, but no dedicated intercontinental freighter terminal. Customs clearance is handled on site by the Canada Border Services Agency, while seafood exports additionally require Canadian Food Inspection Agency certification. Road connections are thin: the Trans-Canada Highway links St. John's with Gander some 330 km away, and mainland Canada is reachable by truck only via the Port aux Basques ferry. That isolation makes air freight a necessity rather than an upgrade, particularly for time-critical spares serving offshore oil and the fishing industry. Gander International (YQX) remains the option for freighter charters and technical stops, while Halifax Stanfield (YHZ) is Atlantic Canada's largest cargo gateway. Fog and winter storms cause recurring delays that should be built into transit-time commitments for perishables.
