YUL Airport (Montreal / Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Freighters have been fading across Canada while belly space grows scarce, and Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL/CYUL) illustrates both trends: it handled 158,300 tonnes of cargo in 2024, up 20.1 percent year on year and third nationally behind Toronto Pearson and Vancouver. Together with nearby Mirabel (YMX) — also operated by Aéroports de Montréal — the Montréal system moved 249,403 tonnes in 2024, about 16 percent of all Canadian air cargo. The split matters for routing: dedicated freighter and charter operations concentrate at Mirabel, while Trudeau carries most of its tonnage in the bellies of scheduled passenger flights. Canadian airports are currently upgrading cargo terminals, apron areas and handling technology, helped by a federal policy of 10 March 2025 that opened airport logistics infrastructure to more private investment. Importers should note that since 1 April 2025 Canada's Pre-Load Air Cargo Targeting (PACT) programme requires a security risk assessment of inbound shipments before they are loaded at origin. Landside, the Port of Montréal supports sea-air combinations, and trucking links reach Toronto (roughly 540 km) and the US Northeast. Customs clearance is handled by the Canada Border Services Agency, with Mirabel (YMX) the alternative for maindeck capacity and Toronto Pearson (YYZ) for the widest long-haul choice.
