EWR Airport (Newark Liberty International Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Newark Liberty (IATA: EWR, ICAO: KEWR) is better known as a passenger airport, yet it moved roughly 616,000 tonnes of freight in 2025 and ranks among the strongest air cargo locations on the US East Coast. Operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, it shares management with the adjacent Port Newark-Elizabeth container terminals, which makes sea-air and air-truck combinations unusually short. FedEx, UPS and DHL run express operations on site, and United Airlines contributes substantial belly capacity through United Cargo. Around 1 million square feet of cargo warehouse space is available, including a modern facility run by Swissport for third-party customers. Clearance is handled by US Customs and Border Protection with electronic filing through ACE; importers should have their bond and importer-of-record details in place before arrival. The New Jersey Turnpike and Interstate 78 connect the airport to New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York, putting most of the metropolitan hinterland within a few hours by truck. Since 2025 the FAA has applied tightened operating limitations at EWR because of airspace and capacity constraints, with unscheduled cargo and charter flights accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis. Shippers looking for broader intercontinental freighter capacity usually compare John F. Kennedy (JFK), while Philadelphia (PHL) is the practical option for traffic moving south.
