CUZ Airport (Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Few airports illustrate the gap between passenger volume and cargo capacity as clearly as Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (IATA: CUZ, ICAO: SPZO) in Cusco. It is Peru's second-busiest passenger terminal, handling over 3 million travellers in 2023, yet it carries almost no dedicated freight. Sitting at roughly 3,310 metres in a tight Andean valley, the airport is the principal entry point for tourists bound for Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, served by LATAM, Sky Airline, JetSMART and Avianca on largely domestic routes. Operations are restricted to daylight hours and favourable weather, with landings only from the south onto runway 28. The altitude limits aircraft payloads, and there is no specialised cargo terminal; goods move mainly as belly freight aboard passenger flights. For genuine export capacity the region relies on Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) in Lima, where shipments from Cusco are typically routed. The planned replacement airport at Chinchero, originally targeted for 2026, has been pushed back to late 2027, when its longer, wider runway is meant to accept direct long-haul flights from North America and Europe.
