CIX Airport (Air Force Captain Jose A Quinones Gonzales International Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Chiclayo is a passenger airport with cargo ambitions rather than a cargo airport: CIX (ICAO SPHI) handled roughly 921,000 passengers in 2024, and air freight still moves purely as belly cargo, mostly on the Lima trunk route. The ongoing modernisation programme is meant to change that, adding a runway extended to 2,693 metres, a 43,000 m² passenger terminal replacing today's 1,851 m², a cargo facility, a new control tower and a fuel plant; published investment figures range from USD 350 million to USD 441 million, with capacity targeted at about 2.2 million passengers a year. Aeropuertos del Perú operates the airport under concession. Exporters in Lambayeque — mango, table grapes, rice and sugarcane products — currently still route perishable air freight through Lima Jorge Chávez (LIM), some 770 road kilometres south and effectively Peru's only cold-chain and freighter gateway. Nearer alternatives on the Panamericana are Trujillo (TRU, a little over 200 km south) and Piura (PIU, roughly 200 km north), while Paita port about 280 km north covers the sea-freight option. Anyone planning capacity out of northern Peru should treat the new cargo terminal as a project milestone, not as available infrastructure.
