Atlas Air, Inc., headquartered in White Plains, New York, is a cargo airline and the principal operating carrier of Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. Since 17 March 2023 the group has been owned by an investor group led by Apollo, together with J.F. Lehman & Company and Hill City Capital; the transaction valued the company at approximately USD 5.2 billion and ended its Nasdaq listing. Atlas Air was founded in 1992 by Michael Chowdry and began operations with a single converted Boeing 747-200 out of New York JFK. The business model is largely outsourcing: ACMI and CMI contracts, ad hoc and programme charters, military and humanitarian missions, and passenger charters. In addition, Atlas Air runs its own scheduled network to South America out of Miami, which according to the carrier moves more than 100 million kilograms of freight a year – flowers, fruit and other perishables as well as machinery and construction materials. The schedule effective 9 March 2026 serves Bogotá, Quito, Manaus, Campinas, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Lima, Buenos Aires, Santiago, Medellín and San Juan from Miami; fifth freedom rights additionally permit services within South America. The fleet comprises the Boeing 747-8F, 747-400F, 777-200F, 767-300BCF/BDSF and 737-300F/-400/-800F types (as of September 2026). On 16 March 2026 Atlas Air Worldwide placed a firm order for 20 Airbus A350F freighters with options for a further 20; deliveries are scheduled from 2029 to 2034. For forwarders: Atlas Air operates under IATA code 5Y, ICAO designator GTI and AWB prefix 369. The carrier does not accept charges collect shipments and offers no cargo insurance of its own. Valuable cargo from USD 1,000 per kilogram requires 24 hours advance arrangement, and declared values above USD 10,000 need prior written approval from headquarters.
