Freight forwarders and customs agents use the transit procedure to move goods under customs supervision across customs territories, deferring duties and taxes until the goods reach their destination or are assigned a new customs procedure. Intermediate border points require no fresh declarations, which keeps through-traffic moving efficiently. In Europe, the procedure is administered electronically via the New Computerised Transit System (NCTS). Transit status must not be confused with release for free circulation: goods under transit have not been cleared and carry no Union customs status.
