Khor Fakkan invests in expansion as an alternative hub for freight traffic
The port of Khor Fakkan in the United Arab Emirates is set to further strengthen its significance in international container shipping. Port operator Gulftainer is pursuing a long-term strategy to establish the location as a powerful logistics hub outside the Strait of Hormuz.
During recent tensions in the Gulf region, Khor Fakkan has already gained in importance. Thanks to its location outside the major shipping route, the port is well-suited as an alternative hub for container traffic and transshipment services. At the same time, the location can efficiently forward goods to the region via land connections.
According to the expansion plans presented, annual transshipment capacity is to increase from the current 3.5 million TEU to 5 million TEU. In the long term, the master plan even envisions a capacity of more than 10 million TEU. Additionally, inland logistics parks are being developed with a combined annual capacity of 2.3 million TEU.
With the expansion, Gulftainer aims to more closely integrate sea freight, road transport, and logistics centers. This creates additional opportunities for shipping lines, freight forwarders, and shippers in route planning and risk management.
Particularly in times of geopolitical uncertainty, alternative transshipment hubs are gaining in importance. Flexible transport networks and efficient hinterland connections can help make supply chains more resilient and enable better control of transit times.
