A freight forwarder is a commercial intermediary that organizes and manages the transportation of goods on behalf of shippers. It selects carriers and transport modes, plans routes, prepares shipping documents such as bills of lading and air waybills, and handles customs clearance – without necessarily carrying the cargo itself. That distinction is key: the forwarder organizes, the carrier moves. Forwarders frequently specialize by mode (air, sea, road, rail) or by commodity type such as perishables, hazardous materials, or project cargo. Acting as the central link between consignor and consignee, the freight forwarder bears responsibility for accurate documentation and smooth supply chain execution.
