DHL Group will invest more than 400 million euros in Central and Eastern Europe by 2030. The company presented the plan on October 8th. Among other things, warehouses, transport networks, express services, and freight capacities are mentioned. Poland plays a central role in the plans.
DHL also sees the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Romania as important growth markets. According to the company, this is due to the region's increasing importance for production and distribution in Europe. Some companies are bringing their sourcing or manufacturing closer to European customers. For shippers, this can mean different transport routes and new warehouse locations.
The announced sum is a multi-year plan. It is not available as additional capacity today. Anyone wishing to use a new location or specific connection from this will therefore need the respective opening dates and service offerings. A general investment announcement does not replace a binding transport commitment.
For freight forwarders, it is worthwhile to take a closer look at existing goods flows. Which customers are already producing in the region? Where are partial shipments regularly picked up? And where is there a lack of suitable warehousing or transshipment solutions? These questions are more helpful than a general expectation that every connection will automatically become faster.
When comparing new offerings, return loads and handovers should also be considered. A well-connected location may look suitable on the map, but may have impractical acceptance times for your own cargo. Therefore, transit time, departure frequency, and delivery area should be examined together.
Shippers should discuss planned changes to their production and sales locations early with their transport partners. This makes it possible to check whether existing contracts still apply or whether new connections make sense. The DHL announcement shows a direction for network expansion. The benefit in day-to-day operations is ultimately determined by the services actually available and their price.
