Definition & Explanation

The transport route defines the geographical path a shipment follows from origin to destination, encompassing every mode used, all transshipment points, and any intermediate storage. It may be direct – a nonstop truck run or a single flight – or built from multiple legs combining road, rail, sea, and air. Freight forwarders select and monitor routes based on cost, transit time, reliability, and risk exposure; infrastructure disruptions, capacity constraints, or geopolitical shifts can prompt a reassessment at any time. The transport route should not be confused with the transport mode: the mode refers to the means of conveyance, the route to the full path from origin to final destination.
