The German Federal Association for Freight Transport, Logistics and Disposal, or BGL for short, and Depotcharge are jointly advancing a charging network for electric trucks. BGL Charge is designed to make existing charging points in freight forwarding depots accessible to other fleets. The underlying association announcement was already published on September 15, 2026.
The idea is straightforward: an operator does not need to use their own charging facility at all times. During idle periods, other companies can charge there. According to BGL, the operators themselves decide on prices, access, and availability. The platform handles access control and billing, among other things.
For freight forwarders, this can be an additional option along their routes. However, registration in the network does not guarantee a free charging point at the desired location. The companies and vehicles mentioned in the initial announcement are also not indicative of station numbers. For operational planning, specific information about the respective facility is therefore required.
Before first use, dispatch should check access routes, vehicle dimensions, and opening hours. Available charging capacity and any time restrictions should also be part of the inquiry. A location may be technically suitable but still be poorly suited to a route due to an occupied loading dock or restricted access.
For depot operators, clear regulation of procedures is recommended. Where does an external driver check in? Who assists in case of a malfunction? And how is it prevented that a charging truck interferes with internal transshipment operations? Such questions should be answered before the first guest vehicle arrives.
Shippers should also consider the entire route when utilizing electric transport services. Additional charging options can support planning. Whether they actually enable a specific runtime must be calculated by the transport provider based on their vehicles and operating conditions. The network is thus a practical supplement. It replaces neither a confirmed charging opportunity nor careful planning of charging time and delivery.
