Charging infrastructure covers all stationary installations that supply electrically powered vehicles with energy – charging points and charging stations as well as the grid connection behind them, the transformer station, load management and billing systems. In freight logistics a distinction is drawn between depot charging on the operator's own premises, carried out overnight or during idle periods, and public fast charging along long-haul corridors. For heavy commercial vehicles the bottleneck is not the charge point itself but the available connected load at the site: a megawatt-class charging point can draw as much power as a small industrial plant, which is why grid connection applications, permitting procedures and construction time often have to run months or years ahead of vehicle procurement. Haulage operators therefore treat charging infrastructure as a separate investment with its own payback calculation rather than as an accessory to the vehicle.
