Overview

Albania (ISO-Code: AL) is located in Southeastern Europe on the Balkan Peninsula, bordered by Montenegro and Kosovo to the north, North Macedonia to the east, Greece to the south, and the Adriatic Sea to the west. The country is a parliamentary republic with stable political structures, but it is not a member of the European Union. The climate is Mediterranean along the coast and continental inland, characterized by hot summers and mild winters. Economically, Albania is based on agriculture, mining, energy production, and increasingly on services and tourism. Foreign trade is concentrated on EU countries, with Albania heavily reliant on imports, particularly of energy, machinery, and consumer goods. Strategically, the country lies along important transit routes between the Mediterranean and the Balkans, which has logistical significance for transport and trade. The national currency is the Albanian Lek (ALL). Thanks to its geographical position, Albania serves as a bridge between Southeast Europe and the Mediterranean region. The Port of Durrës plays a central role in import and export. The infrastructure is continuously being improved to enhance logistics and trade capacities.

Customs / Import / Export (Europe)

Quick operational overview for international shipments to Europe. Depending on the destination (customs union, VAT, product rules), steps and documents may differ.

Documents (typical)
  • Commercial invoice (clear description, value, Incoterms)
  • Packing list (weights, dimensions, packages, contents)
  • HS code / tariff classification (duties/taxes and restrictions)
  • Proof of origin / preference docs (where relevant)
  • Transport documents (AWB / Bill of Lading) depending on mode
Process (simplified)
  • Prepare export (docs, HS code, origin)
  • Import clearance in destination country (declaration, possible checks)
  • Release and delivery; duties/taxes according to classification and value
Common pitfalls
  • Vague description or missing HS codes → delays and clarifications
  • Incoterms unclear: who clears customs/pays charges?
  • Incomplete origin data → preferential treatment may not apply
  • Inconsistent documents (invoice vs packing list vs shipment data)
Important: Requirements depend on goods, origin, Incoterms, value, and consignee. When in doubt, confirm with your broker/forwarder and official sources.
