SHA Airport (Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Shanghai Hongqiao International (SHA/ZSSS) handled roughly 445,000 tonnes of cargo and mail in 2025, a fraction of the more than four million tonnes moving through its sister airport across the city. That gap defines the airport's role: Hongqiao, in Minhang district, is primarily a domestic and short-haul gateway, while Pudong carries Shanghai's international freighter traffic. Cargo here travels overwhelmingly as belly freight on passenger flights and as domestic express volume for Chinese courier operators, not on dedicated freighters. International service is limited to a narrow band of short-haul routes such as Tokyo Haneda, Seoul Gimpo and Taipei Songshan, so cross-border air freight is in practice routed via Pudong. For shippers that makes SHA relevant to fast domestic movements within China: spare parts, documents, electronics and e-commerce parcels. The airport sits about 13 km from the city centre with strong ring-road and metro access, and roughly 40 to 50 km from Pudong (PVG) by truck, typically an hour or more in traffic. Customs formalities for international consignments are normally handled at the Pudong facilities and their bonded zones. Alternatives for Yangtze River Delta freight include PVG itself, Hangzhou (HGH) with its heavy e-commerce volumes and Nanjing (NKG).
