Operated by the Brazilian Air Force, Ponta Pelada (IATA: PLL, ICAO: SBMN) in Manaus is a military base rather than a commercial cargo gateway. The vast freight generated by the Manaus Free Trade Zone — electronics, motorcycles and consumer goods — moves instead through Eduardo Gomes International (MAO), Brazil's largest cargo airport, with three freight terminals across some 49,000 m² and capacity for up to 12,000 tonnes a month, run by Vinci Airports since 2021. Forwarders handling Amazonas shipments therefore work consistently via MAO, with its customs terminal and free-zone facilities. Ponta Pelada itself supports military and government tasks, including supply flights to remote Amazon outposts. For civil airfreight it plays no role.
