Paulo Afonso Airport (PAV/SBUF) is a regional field, not a freight platform: set amid the canyons and CHESF hydroelectric dams of the São Francisco River in northern Bahia, it serves passengers rather than scheduled cargo. Air service has been intermittent — Azul flew three times weekly to Recife and VoePass to Salvador on ATR 72s, but the airport again lost scheduled passenger links in 2024. Under Brazil's federal Programa Ampliar, commercial flights are slated to return in 2025. No meaningful scheduled freight is handled here; air cargo moves as belly capacity or by road. Forwarders plan consignments through Petrolina (PNZ) and the Recife (REC) cargo gateway. The dams and waterfalls also make Paulo Afonso a regional tourism reference.
