BGY Airport (Milan Bergamo Airport / Antonio Locatelli Air Base) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Passengers up, express freight rebalanced: Milan Bergamo (IATA: BGY, ICAO: LIME) at Orio al Serio is Italy's third-busiest airport and Ryanair's largest Italian base with some 17 million travellers a year, yet much of its cargo migrated when DHL Express relocated its air hub to Malpensa (completed 2022). The field handled around 23,920 tonnes of freight and mail in 2025, up 7.4 percent on 2024, mostly courier and express traffic, and now serves as Italy's UPS gateway, with a new logistics park aiming to revive export volumes. Additional warehousing and further freighter stands have been announced, though the six-figure tonnage targets circulating for 2027 are project figures rather than confirmed capacity. A dedicated cargo area with customs service remains active, so BGY works as a normal point of entry for non-EU imports, and the direct link to the A4 motorway — Lombardy's east–west axis — keeps the site attractive for express operators. Shippers handling intercontinental consignments, dangerous goods or temperature-controlled cargo generally revert to Malpensa (MXP, about 90 kilometres west), while Venice (VCE) is the obvious alternative for north-eastern Italy. Operator SACBO brands the field Il Caravaggio, after the painter born nearby; Bergamo's old town sits just 5 kilometres away, Milan about 50 kilometres west. One more distinction: the site doubles as an Italian Air Force base, named after aviator Antonio Locatelli.
