The code GBB belongs to an airport whose infrastructure outstrips its timetable: Gabala in northern Azerbaijan offers a 3,600-metre runway able to take wide-body aircraft, yet only a handful of routes, essentially Baku, Moscow and Abu Dhabi. Opened in 2011 on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus, it exists mainly for tourism to the ski resorts and heritage sites around Gabala. There is no freight terminal, no permanent cargo handling and no regular freighter service; what little air cargo moves does so in the belly of those few scheduled flights. Shipments to or from northern Azerbaijan are therefore routed through Heydar Aliyev International (GYD) in Baku, about 225 km to the south-east and home base of Silk Way West Airlines. Onward trucking runs via Ismayilli and Shamakhi, with Ganja (KVD) the nearest alternative in the west of the country.
