In the south of Maranhão, Brigadeiro Lysias Augusto Rodrigues Airport (IATA: CLN, ICAO: SBCI) mainly serves business aviation, charters and general aviation linked to the Chapada das Mesas tourism region. It has no scheduled freight service, no cargo terminal and no bonded customs post. Air cargo from this area is trucked along the BR-230 and BR-010 to far better connected Imperatriz (ITZ), a little over 200 kilometres to the north-west, or onward to the Palmas (PMW)–Brasília (BSB) axis, where it joins Brazil's national cargo network. Receita Federal clearance takes place at the bonded facilities of those larger airports, with overseas consignments usually routed through Viracopos (VCP). The local economy rests on farming, cattle and growing nature tourism — goods that move by road, if they move at all by air. For forwarders, CLN is a feeder point in a road-air chain rather than a freight gateway in its own right.
