Where most airports measure success in tonnage, Basco Airport (IATA: BSO, ICAO: RPUO) measures it in connectivity to the outside world — it is the lifeline of the remote Batanes islands at the northern tip of the Philippines. Philippine Airlines turboprops link the island to Manila and Clark, alongside regional operators Sky Pasada and Air Republiq serving northern Luzon. Air freight is negligible, limited to small consignments riding in the belly of passenger aircraft. The Philippine civil aviation authority CAAP has completed the runway extension, while stopway widening and an asphalt overlay continue. Sitting about 89 metres above sea level on exposed terrain, the field is regularly disrupted by strong winds and by the typhoon season. For logistics purposes Basco is not a cargo point: shipments to and from Batanes are consolidated through Manila.
