Set in the coastal range about 15 kilometres east-south-east of town at 1,059 metres above sea level, Barriles Airport (TOQ, ICAO SCBE) serves the northern Chilean port town of Tocopilla. Its traffic is mainly regional passenger and general-aviation flying, and the field has no cargo terminal. Meaningful airfreight is absent here, with the town's trade running through its maritime port and along Ruta 1. Customs and freight handling therefore do not take place at the airport. Consignments from the region route via Antofagasta (ANF), roughly 190 road kilometres to the south, or onward to Santiago (SCL). For the mining and power industries of the Antofagasta Region the road remains the standard channel, with air reserved for spare parts and urgent shipments.
