When a customs broker keys a Swiss import into e-dec, the declaration header requires a code stating how the consignment is to be assessed: the assessment type. It determines which assessment procedure applies and, in turn, which further data fields become mandatory. From 1 November 2026, goods benefiting from an end-use-dependent duty reduction must be declared under assessment type "5 Zollerleichterung" (customs relief); the Swiss customs authority BAZG then also requires the customs preference code from the Tares tariff database, the specific end use in the goods description, and the business partner ID of the holder of the end-use undertaking. An incorrect assessment type results in rejection of the declaration or assessment at the standard rate of duty. It should not be confused with the customs procedure itself.
