In the trade dispute between the USA and Canada, the next deadline is approaching. The US government has set additional tariffs of 50% on selected Canadian goods for August 19, 2026. Affected products include items from the alcohol, dairy products, clothing, and building materials sectors. Energy, potash, and various raw materials are exempt.
Important: This does not concern all imports from Canada. According to the US trade authority, the new round affects goods valued at approximately 20 billion US dollars. This represents around 5.2% of total US merchandise imports from Canada in 2025.
For freight forwarders, one thing is particularly important: This time, goods that would normally receive preferential tariff treatment under the North American Free Trade Agreement USMCA may also be affected. Anyone operating or organizing Canada-USA shipments should therefore review the tariff classification numbers of their goods once more.
However, the matter is not yet finalized. Canada and the USA are negotiating practically daily. According to Reuters information, both sides want to find a solution before August 19.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has simultaneously made clear that Canada will consider countermeasures if the negotiations fail. Which goods would be affected by this remains open for now.
