About This Seaport
CMA CGM and the operators of Puerto Antioquia have turned the municipality of Turbo, on the Gulf of Urabá, into Colombia's newest Caribbean cargo gateway. Inaugurated in early 2026, the multipurpose Puerto Antioquia (Puerto de Urabá) terminal is built to receive containers, refrigerated cargo, dry bulk and general goods. Until then, the region relied on Turbo's open roadstead, where bananas were loaded onto reefer vessels by barge and as breakbulk. Backed by roughly US$774 million in investment, the new port targets a sizeable share of the country's foreign trade and domestic freight, with annual capacity around 6.6 million tonnes. Bananas dominate the export mix alongside plantains, avocados, coffee and cocoa from the Antioquia hinterland, which supplies about 75% of Colombian banana exports. Road links toward Medellín form the principal hinterland connection. For established Caribbean container services, Cartagena and the Barranquilla port cluster remain the larger alternatives.
