About This Seaport
4,143,321 TEU moved through Cartagena (CO CTG) in 2025, the first time in 32 years that the Grupo Puerto de Cartagena has crossed four million boxes and up from 3.7 million TEU the year before. The Colombian Caribbean port remains the region's largest transshipment centre and one of Latin America's busiest container gateways: its port zone accounts for roughly 65 percent of national container volume, and 45.9 percent of all vessels calling in Colombia stop here. Two operators share the work — Sociedad Portuaria Regional de Cartagena (SPRC) beside the historic city and Contecar in the industrial district — with combined capacity above 6.2 million TEU a year; cargo through June 2026 reached 16.9 million tonnes. More than 30 carriers connect Cartagena with North America, Europe and Asia, and a large share of throughput is pure relay between east-west and north-south services. For importers it is Colombia's principal entry point for consumer goods, machinery, chemicals and breakbulk, while coffee, coal, cut flowers and manufactured goods head out, supported by thousands of reefer plugs for perishables. Clearance runs through Colombia's DIAN customs authority, and several free-trade zones (Zonas Francas) at the port allow duty-deferred storage and processing. Hinterland distribution is mainly by road, with long-haul links to Bogotá and Medellín; rail plays only a minor role for containers. Alternatives include Barranquilla and Santa Marta on the Caribbean and Buenaventura on the Pacific coast.
