About This Seaport
Commissioned in 1986 by Occidental Petroleum and run by Ecopetrol since 2011, Coveñas exists for one purpose: shipping Colombian crude. This open roadstead on the Caribbean coast of Sucre is the saltwater end of the 771-kilometre Caño Limón–Coveñas pipeline, which carries crude from the Venezuelan border region at around 220,000 barrels per day. Tankers load offshore via single-point mooring buoys and floating storage rather than at a conventional quay, with Ecopetrol holding roughly 9 million barrels of storage and serving private shippers such as BP, Trafigura, Parex and Frontera alongside its own volumes. There is no container, breakbulk or reefer handling here; channel depths above 20 metres suit large crude carriers, not boxships. Forwarders moving containers or project cargo should route via Cartagena or Barranquilla instead. For tanker operators and crude exporters, however, Coveñas ranks among Colombia's principal loading points.
