About This Seaport
Ternium Siderar anchors the port of San Nicolás, running one of Argentina's largest steel plants here with around 4.9 million tonnes of annual capacity and feeding it by river. The works terminal Muelle Ingeniero Buitrago comprises two berths: Buitrago North (680 m mooring, 6.8 m draft, max 230 m LOA) and Buitrago South (320 m, 9.0 m draft). Coal imports from Indonesia, the United States and Australia, plus iron ore from Brazil and limestone from Canada, make up the bulk of traffic, delivered by Panamax and Capesize bulk carriers. The public port adds grain and oilseeds, averaging roughly 350,000 tonnes a year, transhipped from barges arriving via the Paraguay-Paraná waterway. Road and rail tie the site, about 230 km northwest of Buenos Aires, to its hinterland. Containerised shipments are better routed through Buenos Aires or Zárate, while San Nicolás specialises in industrial raw materials and agribulk.
