About This Seaport
Some 60 km south of Buenos Aires, between the towns of Ensenada and Berisso, Puerto La Plata (UN/LOCODE AR LPG, formerly Eva Perón) reaches the Río de la Plata through a 2.5-nautical-mile artificial channel. Its flagship is TecPlata, Argentina's only greenfield container terminal, semi-automated and operated by ICTSI with capacity for around 450,000 TEU and room to grow beyond one million. Alongside boxes, the port handles coal, petcoke, petroleum products, chemicals, RoRo and breakbulk, while an adjacent YPF terminal serves the local refinery. Limited draft in the access channel remains a constraint, so many carriers still favour Buenos Aires or Dock Sud for mainline calls. Road and rail link the port to the wider Buenos Aires metropolitan market. For container traffic, Buenos Aires and Zárate are practical alternatives, with Bahía Blanca an option for bulk.
