Overview

Bermuda (ISO-Code: BM) is a British Overseas Territory in the North Atlantic, located about 1,000 km east of the US coast near North Carolina. The archipelago consists of approximately 138 islands connected by bridges and causeways. Politically, Bermuda is subject to the United Kingdom but has extensive self-government and its own parliament. The climate is subtropical, with mild winters and warm, humid summers, making the island an attractive location for tourism. Economically, Bermuda is particularly strong in the finance and insurance sector, while the local industry is limited. Foreign trade is heavily dependent on imports, especially for food, energy, and consumer goods. Due to its geographical location, Bermuda serves only limitedly as a transatlantic hub, primarily for air freight between North America and Europe. The national currency is the Bermudian Dollar (BMD), which is firmly pegged to the US Dollar, facilitating trade and transactions. Bermuda plays a significant role as an offshore financial center and offers logistical advantages for specialized supply chains through its stable infrastructure.

Customs / Import / Export (Americas)

Quick operational overview for international shipments to the Americas. Depending on the destination, additional security filings, product requirements, or broker processes may apply.

Documents (typical)
  • Commercial invoice with clear description and value
  • Packing list (weights, dimensions, packages)
  • HS code / tariff classification
  • Proof of origin / preference docs (where relevant)
  • Transport documents (AWB / Bill of Lading) and potential pre-filing data
Process (simplified)
  • Prepare export + data readiness (HS code, origin, values)
  • Import clearance often handled via customs broker
  • Release, delivery, and duties/taxes based on valuation and classification
Common pitfalls
  • Missing/inconsistent values or wrong HS codes → delays
  • Incoterms unclear → who pays charges/broker fees?
  • Overlooked product/regulatory requirements
  • Incomplete data for security/pre-filings → holds/delays
Important: Requirements depend on goods, origin, Incoterms, value, and consignee. When in doubt, confirm with your broker/forwarder and official sources.
