When a shipper hands goods over to a carrier for transport, both the movement itself and the charge paid for it are called freight. The term applies across all modes: road, rail, sea, and air. In commercial usage, freight can refer to the physical goods in transit or to the transport fee, depending on context – a duality that sometimes causes confusion in invoicing and contracts. Freight should not be confused with cargo, which more specifically denotes goods loaded onto a vessel or aircraft, or with carrier, the party actually performing the transport.
