OKO Airport (Yokota Air Base) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Freight forwarders should treat the code OKO as a warning sign rather than a routing option: Yokota Air Base (RJTY) in Fussa, western Tokyo, is a United States Air Force installation and the primary military airlift base in the Indo-Pacific, with no commercial cargo function whatsoever. Resident units include the 374th Airlift Wing flying C-130J Super Hercules, the 459th Airlift Squadron and the 21st Special Operations Squadron with CV-22B Ospreys, alongside the headquarters of US Forces Japan and Fifth Air Force. The roughly 3,350-metre runway serves military airlift and occasional government flights only — there is no cargo terminal, no civilian handling agent and no scheduled freighter service. Civilian air cargo for the Tokyo region moves through Narita (NRT) for intercontinental traffic or Haneda (HND) for intra-Asian and express shipments, roughly 60 and 40 kilometres away by road respectively. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has long argued for opening Yokota to civil flights to relieve pressure on those two airports, but no decision has been taken. Where the base does touch logistics is disaster relief: it serves as a staging point for US humanitarian airlift after earthquakes and typhoons across the Western Pacific.
