SDJ Airport (Sendai Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Rebuilt after the 2011 tsunami swept across its runways and privatised in 2016, Sendai Airport (SDJ/RJSS) now serves as the main air gateway to Japan's Tohoku region. Its cargo throughput of 2,785 tonnes in 2024, up 2.3 percent, places it firmly among regional feeders rather than national freight gateways. Air freight moves almost entirely as belly cargo on passenger aircraft; no regular scheduled freighter operation or dedicated cargo terminal is documented at the airport. The route network covers around 16 domestic destinations and roughly seven international ones, including Taipei and Hong Kong, with international lift provided by carriers such as Air China, Asiana Airlines and EVA Air, some routes running seasonally. In practice this suits spare parts, electronics, samples and time-critical small consignments, while palletised or heavy shipments are better routed elsewhere. Japan Customs clears imports and exports at the airport, and most forwarders work through agents in Sendai or Tokyo for complex entries. The seaport of Sendai-Shiogama lies about 20 km away by road, which makes combined sea and air solutions practical for heavier goods. For volume air freight, Tokyo Narita (NRT) some 300 km south and Haneda (HND) remain the obvious alternatives.
