Civil aviation ended here in 2011: when Taiwan's high-speed rail made the short hop to Taipei redundant, scheduled flights from Pingtung Airport (IATA: PIF) ceased, and the field – the northern part of Pingtung's military complex – reverted entirely to the armed forces. During its civilian years the airport handled passengers only; freight never played a measurable role. The IATA code survives in booking systems, but no airline serves it. Forwarders covering the Pingtung region work via Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH), about 30 minutes away by highway, or via Taiwan Taoyuan (TPE) for intercontinental air freight, with the Port of Kaohsiung handling sea cargo.
