About This Airport

Inside the CargoPort precinct on the eastern edge of Lyon Saint-Exupéry (IATA: LYS, ICAO: LFLL) sit handlers, forwarders, customs offices and cool-chain rooms for pharma and perishables — the machinery behind France's largest cargo airport outside Paris. The platform handled 53,852 tonnes of freight in 2024, up 8.3 percent year on year. The customer base is on the doorstep: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is France's second-largest industrial region after Île-de-France, with chemicals, pharmaceuticals (Sanofi, BioMérieux) and machinery driving exports, and the airport is positioning itself specifically as a hub for temperature-controlled medicines. Integrator express services and occasional freighter charters supplement the belly capacity of scheduled flights, while much regional cargo also moves by road feeder to Paris-CDG. More capacity is on the way: a 25,300 square-metre air-freight building known as Aéroport de Lyon DC1 is going up on a 5.2-hectare plot immediately beside the runways, with temperature-controlled zones for medicines, perishables and phytosanitary goods, and delivery scheduled before summer 2026. Heavy investment underlines the logistics pull: Amazon is building a fulfilment centre here for around 200 million euros and DHL opened a 50,000 square-metre facility with direct runway access for about 121 million. On the passenger side, Lyon counts around 10 million travellers a year. The site holds one piece of world-class architecture: the TGV station by Santiago Calatrava, a steel bird with outstretched wings, plugs the airport directly into the high-speed rail network — a rarity among Europe's regional airports. By road, the A432 and the city's motorway ring serve the platform; central Lyon lies about 25 kilometres west and is 30 minutes away on the Rhônexpress tram.
