LTN Airport (London Luton Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

With more than 17.5 million passengers in 2025 but only a modest dedicated freight operation, London Luton (LTN/EGGW) is best understood as a niche express and charter cargo field north of London rather than a tonnage-driven cargo airport. Its LLA Cargo Centre hosts scheduled freighter services for DHL, MNG Airlines and British Airways alongside ad-hoc and charter traffic, with Swissport among the handling agents on site. Traffic skews towards express parcels, spare parts, aircraft-on-ground and automotive emergencies and other time-critical consignments, while bulk or intercontinental main-deck charters usually go elsewhere. Sitting some 50 km north of central London directly on the M1, Luton offers a shorter run to the Midlands and Birmingham than the Thames-side airports, though southbound deliveries face the congested M25. Customs follows standard post-Brexit UK practice with CDS declarations and GVMS for accompanied road movements, and integrator shipments are typically cleared by the carrier's own broker. In 2025 the airport and logistics provider GXO announced Luton's first consolidation centre, screening all airside deliveries through a single controlled point. Ground handling staff employed by DHL struck over pay in December 2025, with disruption ending only when an improved deal was accepted in January 2026 — worth factoring into time-critical planning. For regular scheduled freighter capacity, shippers generally compare London Stansted, the FedEx and UPS base, with East Midlands, the UK's principal express freight airport.
